Periodontal disease is the most common disease in dogs and cats — up to 80% of dogs over three years old suffer from some degree of gum disease. Left untreated, it leads to destruction of tooth support structures, bone loss and ultimately tooth loss. PerioVive is a hyaluronic acid gel developed for veterinary use that brings a new option for treating periodontal disease during dental procedures.
What is PerioVive?
PerioVive is a 0.8% hyaluronic acid (HA) gel designed for veterinary dental procedures. Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in connective tissue, gums and joint fluid that plays a key role in tissue healing and regeneration. The gel is applied directly to periodontal pockets and treatment areas during the dental procedure.
How Does It Work?
Hyaluronic acid works through multiple mechanisms. It reduces inflammation and swelling in the gums, promotes soft tissue and bone regeneration, supports blood clot stability at the treatment site, forms a protective barrier against microbes and accelerates tissue healing. Studies show a single dose of HA after the procedure accelerated tissue healing, increased bone formation and significantly reduced periodontal pocket depth.
Scientific Evidence
There is research evidence for the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid in treating periodontal disease in both dogs and humans. In a canine study (Tella et al. 2023), bone defects treated with 0.8% hyaluronic acid gel regained approximately 89% of lost bone height, compared with approximately 39% in untreated control defects. The reduction in pocket depth and the improvement in clinical attachment were statistically significant. The effectiveness of HA is supported by several canine studies and numerous human studies, including a meta-analysis of 13 randomized controlled trials (Eliezer et al. 2019).
When is PerioVive Used?
PerioVive is suitable for treating deepened periodontal pockets after scaling, promoting healing after tooth extraction, during gingival surgical procedures and slowing the progression of periodontal disease. The gel is applied to the treatment area during anesthesia, so no separate visit is needed.
